A scale position is a practical way to focus on part of a larger fretboard map. The notes still belong to the same scale; the position view simply gives you a smaller area to practise before connecting it to the rest of the neck.
Set the key, scale and tuning
Choose the key and scale for the sound you want to practise, then select the tuning on your guitar. The same scale formula lands on different frets when the tuning changes. Starting with the correct tuning keeps the note map and tablature relevant to the instrument in your hands.
If you want a familiar starting point, try A minor pentatonic in Standard tuning. For an alternate tuning example, compare it with G major in Open G.
Use the full map to find the roots
Before practising a small section, scan the full fretboard for the root notes. These are the anchors that make it clear where the scale resolves. Play a root on one string, then find the next root in another position before following the tab.
The note list and fretboard map let you check the note names against the pattern. This is useful when a shape feels familiar but the key or tuning has changed.
Practise a five-fret fragment
Select a position button to isolate one five-fret fragment. Play its tab slowly from the lowest note to the highest, then descend. Keep the rhythm even and pause on the root so you can hear how the pattern relates to the key.
Next, choose the neighboring position. Find a note or root that helps you orient yourself, then practise moving from the end of one fragment into the beginning of the next. The goal is to connect the map, not to memorise five unrelated boxes.
Add chord tones and make a musical phrase
Once the notes are familiar, use the matching-chord suggestions as a starting point for hearing how the scale sits over harmony. Try ending a short phrase on a chord tone, then compare it with a phrase that ends on another scale note.
Change one filter at a time to compare keys, scales or tunings. Use the interactive guitar scale finder to choose a new combination, view the updated positions and copy a tab fragment for practice.
