Theory & Context

Why This Shape Works

The A Major scale uses A, B, C♯, D, E, F♯, G♯ and the formula 1 2 3 4 5 6 7. In Open G tuning, the open strings run D B G D G D from highest to lowest, so use this map rather than a Standard-tuning shape. Use the map to locate each A root, then select a five-fret position to see its tablature. The chord suggestions use notes from this scale.

Overview

Major sounds bright, open and strongly resolved. Try it for melodic hooks, pop leads and clean chord melody work. The open strings in Open G form a G major chord: D-G-D-G-B-D from low to high. Find the fretted scale notes around those open strings.

Practice Tip

Lean on the 3rd and 7th to make the major colour obvious. In Open G, compare the fretted notes with the open G, B and D strings.
